The idea of recreating my late friend @makeupbyguelila’s looks started with me texting my dear friend Tati (@therealmuahxtati).
This expanded to include other creators who shared community with Guelila, so please check out @therealmuahxtati, @codenamekass, and @ssylverstar’s looks when you all get a chance. I’m in awe of how everyone came together to celebrate Guelila’s creativity.
Guelila—at only 25 years old—died of Long COVID in January.
People who die of chronic illness, especially illness related to the COVID-19 pandemic have a name. They have a story. They had a life just as vivid as your own. May we all experience empathy and sonder.
Please do not pervert the memory of my friend to uphold anti-vax agendas or other weird conspiracies in poor taste. She actively spoke about Long COVID slowly ruining her quality of life, and it pains me to even give such disclaimers.
Guelila and I shared a brief friendship that felt we’d known each other a lifetime. We had so much in common, and we never had a dull moment. I cherish the times we got to FaceTime each another on some goofy mess. The texts in which we both lamented being chronically ill baddies. The kind gestures we exchanged for our birthdays (only ten days apart).
She (and others like her who passed from COVID complications) deserved fuller lives. COVID is not something we should be normalizing when more than one infection could lead to something like this.
I urge everyone to do their part in mitigating COVID so that none of you will be unlucky enough to experience something this sorrowful in your lifetimes. I urge you to mask up and purify your air as much as you can.
If nothing else, do it for you.
(Again, don’t be weird in my comments and mentions. I don’t play about loss and disability.)

By the way, the instrumental in the video is from “Twice” by Charli XCX. One of my favorite songs to listen to when things feel hard. It’s about her own friend and producer SOPHIE passing away.
